Monkey Puzzle Tree – Araucaria Araucana
Also known as the Araucaria Araucana, the Monkey Puzzle Tree is an evergreen tree which is notable for its branches bearing a resemblance to the tail of a monkey. Celebrated as an oddity in Britain, Monkey Puzzles are incredibly hardy, surviving even in the arctic circle.
This hardiness can probably be put down to the monkey puzzles origin in the Andes mountains of Chile, indeed Araucaria araucana is the national plant of the Chilean nation. Its infamous leaves are thick and spine-like; almost a cross between a palm and cacti. Monkey Puzzle trees grow directly upwards and shed branches with height.
